CHOSEN * IN PRACTICE
c o l l e c t i o n
draws inspiration from the nocturnal
rituals of creatures of the night.
beginning at home,
with the intimate act of defoliating
an identity and layering garments,
each piece unveils vulnerabilities
often hidden in everyday life.
these are not rave outfits,
but embodiments of sensation:
the weightless embrace of movement,
the shimmer of light across skin,
the rhythm of an overpowering body
released from daily constraint.
elastic armor stretches and deforms,
strings and laces trace the body’s flow,
reflections glimmer like insect wings.
half human, half mythical, the wearer becomes both
untouchable and immersed in the arms of the collective.
distressed, bleached, and reused, the garments
carrie the residue of transformation.
in darkness, only presence remains:
the second skin,
the body,
the collective.

working method 2
w o r k f l o wwhile working on the collection, the critical examination
of the fashion industry also extended to one‘s own pace.
hand embroidery served as a means of slowing down the artistic practice.
trying to find healing in repetetiv movement.
moments of resistance experienced in our daily lives shaped the design. plans
were discarded in favor of emerging needs in one’s own clothing practice.
the felt, threatening global shift to the far right, the pressure on queer lives,
and the emerging feeling of helplessness in the face of the suffering of people
in Gaza, Sudan and Congo are driving the project in new directions. toward
resistance and away from industrial exploitation. CHOSEN*in practice sets off on a
journey. with garments and camera equipment in its baggage, it seeks encounters.
beginning in Johannesburg and Windhoek, it strives to find voices of the global
queer community—connected in the activist practice of raves. In search of hope.

anna menecia antenete hambira

fashion*textile designer*artist,
lecturer and video artist
based in Vienna,
manifests as amaaena.
after studying integrated design in
Bremen(HFK) and completing her fashion
diploma at the angewandte/Vienna, she
founded the fashion project amaaena.
with a strong focus on an
interdisciplinary approach
she creates collections of garments,
still images, digital collages, artistic videos,
short films, music videos and installations.
her work deals with the topics of
r e s i s t a n c e ,
the children of the diaspora,
fragmented identity,
dressing- and community- practices,
archives and remembrance_
all in context of decolonial research,
intersectional feminism and the queer community.
parts of her work have been shown in
several exhibitions and pop-ups in austria
and germany. alongside her artistic
practice, she works at the academy of fine arts,
vienna in the fashions and styles department.
through her work in the fashions and
styles department she was able to give
lectures at the education in the arts

the project engages artistically with the idea of
alternative kinship and chosen family —
social networks of resilience emerging
within subculture, digitality, analog
space, and collective practices.
rave culture
provides the starting point for an
interdisciplinary exploration by amaaena.
originating as a music genre that
fuses machines and technology,
rave has always been tied to the
digital realm while simultaneously
creating queer, analog spaces
of community and kinship.
its do-it-yourself ethos — teaching
and sharing artistic techniques
— runs in parallel with its embodied practices of
dance, excess, intoxication, care,
self-organization, and self-expression.
a surreal space of community, inseparably
linked to night and darkness. even
after capitalist appropriation,
and despite its displacement into
the digital sphere during the global
pandemic, these spaces continue
to be reimagined and reclaimed by
queer-feminist, anti-racist groups.
they gather to celebrate, to create,
to occupy places, to carve out
safety — to form, even if only for a
fleeting moment, a parallel society.

*leftover fabrics and tags from the last collection (yard goods and scrap
pieces _dyed, pieced together, bleached)
*reworked garments from past collections (deconstructed, deformed)
*dead stock fabrics
*fabrics from one‘s own stock
*sewing supplies and beads were purchased.
